In this context, the TIG welder (Tungsten Inert Gas), like the laser welder, has emerged as a tool for an excellent welding technique that combines precision with cutting-edge technology. It is recognized for creating flawless welds on a variety of metals, from stainless steel to aluminum and titanium.

What is a TIG welder?

The TIG welder (Tungsten Inert Gas), also known as a GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) machine, is a tool used to perform tungsten inert gas welding. It is a fusion welding process with special properties that allow precise, high-quality weld beads. The TIG welding process is used, among others, in the aeronautical and aerospace industries.

Basic principles of TIG welding

The basic principles of TIG welding are essential to understand how this highly controlled and precise process works. Here are some of the fundamentals:

1.- Tungsten electrode

A non-consumable tungsten electrode is used. Tungsten is a refractory metal that withstands high temperatures without melting, and is responsible for creating and maintaining the arc with the base metal.

2.- Shielding gas

TIG welding requires a shielding gas, usually argon or an inert gas mix, which creates an inert atmosphere that prevents oxidation and contamination of the molten metal.

3.- Controlled electric arc

The arc forms between the tip of the tungsten electrode and the base metal. The arc energy melts both the electrode and the base metal, creating a molten pool that joins the workpieces.

4.- Precise control

A distinctive feature of the TIG welder is its precise control: the welder adjusts current, filler feed and shielding gas to achieve the desired quality and appearance.

5.- No spatter

Compared to other techniques, TIG welding produces less spatter, reducing cleanup and making it easier to work on high-detail applications.

Metals suitable for TIG welding

TIG welding is known for its versatility and ability to join a wide range of metals and alloys, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, titanium, special alloys such as hastelloy, inconel and monel, and even precious metals like gold and silver in jewelry applications.

Each metal may require specific settings; surface preparation and cleanliness are critical to achieving high-quality welds.
